Know Your Parenting Personality

As a parent, you may have a child that’s a “chip off the old block” so to speak.  Or, you may have realized early on that your child’s basic temperament is not exactly like yours.  In either case, how powerful might it be to better understand yourself as a parent as well as to better understand your children?

We all have personalities – patterns of thoughts, feelings, motivations, and perceptions.  The trap we fall into so often is expecting others, particularly our children, to have similar patterns of thoughts, feelings, motivations, and perceptions.  What impact can this have on our effectiveness as parents?  Yes we can guide, teach, motivate, and support our child’s development but can we “make them who we want them to be?”  Force them into our ideal mold?  Most parents have figured out that that is a very tall order and plain and simply won’t work.

The Enneagram is a model of personality that describes nine worldviews or strategies – nine intelligences.  In Greek ennea means “nine” and gram means “model.”  While there are nine fundamental ways of being in the world, the Enneagram model allows for an infinite variety of individual expression within its nine strategies.  The Enneagram is not about putting people in boxes.  Rather it’s about helping us see and understand the box that we are already in so that we might expand our worldview and enhance our relationships with others.

The Enneagram is an invaluable path to one’s inner growth as a parent.  It’s a dynamic system that can serve as a guide to becoming the parent you want to be.  It can be a powerful tool for:
  • Establishing stronger connections with your child
  • Changing self-defeating behavior patterns
  • Deepening communication with your child
  • Reducing stress
  • Enhancing all of your relationships
  • Better supporting the flowering of your child’s own personality
“My son was a senior in high school when I discovered the Enneagram.  Almost immediately, light bulbs came on and I was able to see my son, myself, and our relationship in radiant new light.  While our relationship was already good, it became even stronger as we used the Enneagram to better understand ourselves and each other.”
